Every small business needs images: a hero shot on the homepage, weekly social posts, a banner for the next promo, a thumbnail for an email. The default options have always been bad — generic stock photos, an expensive designer, or a designer plus a stock photo. The image generators built into Copilot, ChatGPT, and Gemini change that.

Where this is already good enough

  • Social posts (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook).
  • Blog headers and email banners.
  • Concept art for a product, packaging, or storefront.
  • Backgrounds and textures for slides and ads.
  • "In the style of" illustrations that match your brand.

Where it's still iffy: anything that needs perfect text inside the image (use a quick edit in Canva), exact product photography of a real SKU, and human hands doing complicated things.

The tools, and when to use which

  • Copilot (Microsoft): free, fast, built into Windows and Edge. Great for quick social images and slide backgrounds.
  • ChatGPT: the best at following long, specific prompts and iterating. Use it when the image needs to match an existing brand look, or when you want to refine across several tries.
  • Gemini (Google): very strong at photo-real scenes and quick variations. Plays nicely with Google Workspace if your team already lives there.

Build a "house style" prompt and reuse it

The biggest unlock isn't generating one image — it's that everything you make can look like it came from the same brand. Write a short style description once and paste it into every prompt:

Now your homepage hero, your Instagram grid, and your email banner all look like the same company. That visual consistency used to require a designer on retainer.

A simple weekly workflow

  1. Once: write your house-style paragraph. Save it in a note.
  2. Each week: list what you need (3 social posts, 1 email banner, 1 blog header).
  3. Generate each one with house style + the specific subject.
  4. Drop the winners into Canva (or similar) to add your logo and any text — keep the text editing out of the AI tool.
  5. Schedule and post.

Where this saves real money

Stock photo subscriptions, one-off designer requests for social images, and the endless time spent searching for "a photo that kind of works" — all of it shrinks. You keep the designer for the things that genuinely need craft (your logo, your packaging) and let AI handle the steady drumbeat of weekly visuals.

The bar isn't "as good as a top creative agency." The bar is "better than the stock photo I was going to use anyway, in my own style, in two minutes." And it clears that bar today.
